"Portrait of a Goose"
German, circa 1900
Oil on panel
23 x 19 (28 x 24 frame) inches
A fine painted rendition of a well-observed goose. In Greek mythology, the goose, symbolic expression of vitality, fertility and strength, is associated with the myths of Apollo, Aphrodite and Hermes. Eros, the God of love, rode a flying goose, and Priapus was constantly accompanied by the sacred geese.
