"Hunting Dog at a Stop."
Unknown (signature indecipherable)
Oil on panel
Signed lower left
7 1/4 x 9 (10 3/4 x 12 frame)

A very fine depiction of a hunting dog at a stop anticipating its master, rifle in hand in the near background with a second hunting dog. The foreground dog is alert to the presence of a ground bird in the shrubbery on the lower lefthand side.

The image is clear, though somewhat "impressionistic," and exceptionally lively. The use of color is superb and bright with beautiful and confident brushwork.

Though the signature has become abraded, the work was executed by someone who was in complete control of their medium.

"Hunting Dog at a Stop." French School, ca. 1900
