Portrait of “Fox,” a White Terrier.
French School, mid-19th century
Oil on canvas
Illegibly signed, right side
21 ½ x 17 ¾ (26 ¼ x 22 ½)
This charming and quizzical fellow is named “Fox.” Perhaps his name is the result of his bright, clear eyes piercing intensely, like a fox, into the viewer’s eyes.
Though the signature has yet to be deciphered, clearly the artist was one of considerable skill. The texture of the fluffy fur and the play of light and shadow on the dog displays great talent. The dramatic handing of the depth and three-dimensionality of the red drapery reads much like that of chiaroscuro of the Baroque Old Masters.
